Food Advent Calendar – No.7: Ginger

Christmas would not be the same without spicy cookies. This is mainly thanks to our seventh ingredient on our food advent calendar. The hot and zesty ginger.

Ginger is mainly grown in South Asia and is purely a root of a flowery plant. Ginger is used in so many recipes at Christmas time like gingerbread and mince pies. It gives that little bit of spice to the recipe. What would Christmas be like without the gingerbread man? Or what about a gingerbread house?

Gingerbread is a generic word applied to sweet baked products ranging from cakes and bread, to cookies and biscuits, some soft, some brittle and some tooth-breaking hard. Many make use not only of ginger, but various spices, most commonly cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. The spice list goes on with coriander, anise, star anise, cardamom, allspice, mace, and so on, to make a wonderful and iconic Christmas spice mix.
