What is in a name?

Many visitors to our bistro ask a common question: Why Maldonado? You don’t blame them as you would not expect that there actually is a Spanish connection with Gozo.

Maldonado Bistro is dedicated to Eugenio Ramirez Maldonado who was a Spanish Knight of Malta who served as Governor of Gozo. During his time in Gozo he donated a relic of St. Ursola to the Cathedral in Gozo. This relic has just recently been restored as this October it will be celebrating its 400th Anniversary.

We chose to give a noble purpose to the name of our bistro by dedicating our endeavors to a Spanish Knight who contributed to the history and folklore of Gozo.
